In the last “Science Weekly” podcast from the Guardian, the topic was retractions.  At about 20:29 into the episode, Hannah Devlin asked, whether the reason ‘top’ journals retract more articles may be because of increased scrutiny there. The underlying assumption is very reasonable, as many more eyes see each paper in such journals and the motivation to shoot down such high-profile papers might also be higher.

Subtracting about 35% in publisher profits, the remaining difference between legacy and SciELO costs amount to US$3160 per article.

Figures and legends occupy one virtual desktop and the text another. In this way, I can actually review on-screen, but it is one heck of a work-around and by no means convenient.

Looking for a PhD student

After Mike Taylor kept complaining about how horrible my old e107 platform was (which obviously it isn’t: I love this CMS), I finally gave in and moved everything over to a new home. The entire brembs.net domain with all its subdomains is no longer hosted in the good old US of A, where its home was since about 2000, when I moved there myself. After almost ten years back in Germany, I’ve now brought my online presence back home as well.

I recently was sent a report from a university-wide working group on the publishing habits within the Freie Universität Berlin. I don’t think this document is available online, but I think I’m not doing anything illegal if I publish some of the survey results here. The working group polled all faculty members of the university on various questions concerning scholarly publishing.

How important is the Impact Factor?

Think, check, submit: who hasn’t heard of this mantra to help researchers navigate the jungle of commercial publishers? Who isn’t under obligation to publish in certain venues, be it because employers ask for a particular set of journals for hiring, tenure or promotion, or because of funders’ open access mandates?

How academic institutions neglect their duty

The academic journal publishing system sure feels all too often a bit like a sinking boat: we have a reproducibility leak an affordability leak a functionality leak a data leak a code leak an interoperability leak a discoverability leak a peer-review leak a long-term preservation leak a link rot leak an evaluation/assessment leak a data visualization leak … … … and even a tiny access leak still remains even after 30 years of trying to fix it.

**Postdoctoral fellow (m/f) -- neurobiology of spontaneous behavior and
operant learning in Drosophila**

The full time position is initially limited to two years (with possible

**Job description**:

Our lab focuses on the neurobiology of spontaneous behavior and operant
learning using *Drosophila* as a neurogenetic model organism. Methods
include computer-controlled behavioral experiments with wildtype, mutant
and transgenic flies, neuroanatomy using standard and confocal
microscopy as well as some molecular biology such as qPCR to determine
the effectiveness of RNAi-mediated gene knock-down.

**Requirements**:

Outstanding candidates (m/f) holding a PhD in a relevant field and
interested in this topic as well as being enthusiastic about working in
an open science lab are encouraged to apply. The position is fully
funded for 2 years, with possible extension. Nonetheless, ideal
candidates are expected to have or develop a publication record allowing
them to apply for competitive external funding. Candidates with a
background in *Drosophila* biology, coding experience, (R, MatLab,
Python, LabView et al.) or psychology will be given priority;
proficiency in all three areas is an advantage, but not required.
Comprehensive oral and written communication skills in English are also
important.

**Employment**:

The fulltime position is a university-paid, fixed-term position along
the funding scale outlined by the TV-L E13, according to seniority and
including medical and social benefits, as well as a retirement plan. The
position includes a teaching requirement of 5 SWS which can be fulfilled
in either English or German.
