Are published datasets actually being cited? It’s a question that must cross the mind of any avid reader of this blog at least once. We have talked about data citation plenty on this blog. Often, though, we talk about the links between academic resources and datasets — the kind of links collected by our Event Data Service.
Data citation is seen as one of the most important ways to establish data as a first-class scientific output. At Crossref and DataCite, we are seeing growth in journal articles and other content types citing data, and datasets making the link the other way. Our organizations are committed to working together to help realize the data citation community’s ambition, so we’re embarking on a dedicated effort to get things moving.

We are happy to announce the relaunch of our DOI Citation Formatting service, available at http://citation.crosscite.org. The service uses the citeproc.js library by Frank Bennett together with the more than 5,000 citation styles made available by the citationstyles.org project. The service works with DOIs from Crossref, mEDRA and ISTIC in addition to DataCite DOIs.
On July 12, 2016, DataCite invited Andreas Rauber to present the recommendations for dynamic data citation of the RDA Data Citation Working Group in a webinar. Andreas is one of the co-chairs of the RDA working group, and he gave a throughout overview of the recommendations, and the thinking that went into them. The final recommendations are available since last fall, and the current focus of the working group is to help with implementations.
On May 17, 2016, DataCite continued our monthly webinar series with Sebastian Karcher, Associate Director of the Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) at Syracuse University, presenting on Zotero for data repositories. Sebastian is an expert in scholarly referencing and citation workflows and has been a longtime contributor to the Citation Style Language as well as Zotero, the open source reference management software.
Data citation is core to DataCite’s mission and DataCite is involved in several projects that try to facilitate data citation, including THOR, Data Citation Implementation Pilot (DCIP), Research Data Alliance (RDA), and COPDESS.
