In 2020, the DataCite General Assembly approved the introduction of Consortium membership, where a group of like-minded organizations come together to collectively participate in DataCite’s community and governance activities and use DataCite’s DOI services.

After six years as DataCite Technical Director, I am both sad and excited to announce that I will be leaving DataCite, beginning a new adventure as an independent developer for the invenioRDM project on August 1st. My focus will remain on research data management, but with a different angle. A lot has changed since 2015 at DataCite in general, and the DataCite technical architecture in particular.

Metadata that describes scientific software in standard ways – in particular citation metadata such as title, authors, publication year, and venue – is essential for proper software citation implementation. The metadata should be generated by the software author, stored in the code repository, included in submissions to journals, and archived with the source code in a software archive.

What is next? Launching our Strategic Visioning Process

For the last 3 years, we have been sending an annual survey to our members (for previous results, see https://doi.org/10.5438/0x81-y943 and https://doi.org/10.5438/99ne-g618) to receive input which helps us reflect on how we did and how we can improve moving forward. In this blog post, we want to share the outcomes of the 2020 survey and also take the opportunity to look at some of the changes we see compared to previous surveys.

At the end of last year, we had the opportunity to reflect on 2020 (@https://doi.org/10.5438/dc6e-ht89) as a year and plan for 2021. It was certainly a challenging year for all of us in the community and it is during these times that we realize our collective strength! Despite the challenges that we had, DataCite continued to grow as a global community working together.

As 2020 comes to a close, we reflect back on a year of global uncertainty and many challenges faced by our entire community. It can only be described as a year of the unexpected, and it demonstrated the importance of communities working together. Despite the challenges we faced this year, DataCite also had a year with lots to celebrate and it is important to reflect on some of the highlights.

Reflecting on 2020

The DataCite EZ API was first introduced in 2017 to assist those of our Members who transitioned from the California Digital Library (CDL) EZID service. Users were able to make the same API calls they used to make to EZID, just using the DataCite endpoint instead. This was introduced as a temporary solution to support easy transition of services. Finally, 4 years later, it is time to retire the DataCite EZ API.

As a growing global community of 202 members across 42 countries, this year we hosted the Business Meeting of the General Assembly virtually to include as many members of our community as possible. The meeting focused on approving the budget, approving the next steps on the business model, and the Executive Board elections. Along with DataCite’s members, the Executive Board is the governing body of the association.

Today I take a moment to reflect on my first two weeks as DataCite’s Executive Director and share some of my initial impressions. My first week at DataCite had me on my way to Edinburgh to attend FORCE2019. This was an excellent opportunity to engage with members of our community and team.

With the most recent updates to our metadata schema, it’s now possible for our members and their repositories to add ROR IDs as affiliation identifiers in the metadata they submit to DataCite.

Affiliation Facet – New in DataCite Search

Following the updates to the DataCite member model earlier this year, we have been working with several organizations on establishing DataCite consortia. We are therefore very excited to announce that the DataCite Canada Consortium will launch on January 1, 2020!

Our OAI-PMH service is one of the common ways we offer to harvest our public metadata, and we are launching a new version this Wednesday. This technology refresh allows us to continue supporting the OAI-PMH service. For the most part, there is no functional change, we adhere to the OAI-PMH standards and have attempted to keep the service as backward compatible as possible.

As a community organization, it is important that we have the opportunity to meet regularly to engage in open dialog about DataCite related matters. I have really enjoyed meeting with many of you over the past month and gaining a better understanding of what DataCite can do for you.
