As an open infrastructure that is embedded in its community, DataCite is involved in various projects to promote our vision of connecting research and identifying knowledge through persistent identifiers (PIDs). Within the German ORCID DE 2 project, DataCite led the work package on organization identifiers - including ROR. DataCite together with California Digital Library and Crossref sustain the Research Organization Registry (ROR) operations through expertise in developing open, sustainable, community-driven infrastructure for scholarly communications.

In recent years, the creation of infrastructures for global and unique identification of researchers has been promoted by universities, research institutions, and publishers through the use and implementation of ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). In Germany, after a first successful project phase (2016-2019), the project ORCID DE (funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG) was recently granted a second funding phase (2020-2022).

What has hundreds of heads, 91,000 affiliations, and roars like a lion? If you guessed the Research Organization Registry community, you’d be absolutely right! Last month was a big and busy one for the ROR project team: we released a working API and search interface for the registry, we held our first ROR community meeting, and we showcased the initial prototypes at PIDapalooza in Dublin.
