In 2023 we launched the DataCite Global Access Fund (GAF) with the support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative,  established to enable organizations worldwide to make their research outputs discoverable and connect to global open infrastructure. Today, we are thrilled to announce the first cohort of organizations and projects that are receiving GAF funding.

DataCite is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable research landscape, dedicated to enhancing accessibility and empowering underrepresented regions to fully leverage and benefit from our open infrastructure. In February 2023, we launched a Global Access Program (GAP) with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

As part of our mission, we continue to enable organizations and researchers to effortlessly link their outputs and resources into the global research landscape by registering DOIs and metadata. This theme highlights the important role of prioritizing communal benefits and knowledge dissemination over profit-driven motives. By promoting open access to scholarship, this initiative aims to amplify the value of shared information, collaborative endeavors, and the democratization of knowledge. Raising awareness among the research community about the value of prioritizing the common good over commercial interests can foster a culture of open and equitable access, and collective progress. It encourages the research community to actively engage in the dissemination of their work, fostering a vibrant and interconnected research ecosystem that thrives on inclusivity and shared expertise.

DataCite is thrilled to launch the Global Access Fund (GAF), established to enable organizations worldwide to make their research outputs discoverable. It will provide financial support for both outreach activities and infrastructure development to enable organizations in regions and communities currently underrepresented in the global open science infrastructure landscape to benefit from DataCite infrastructure services.

Desde el establecimiento del primer consorcio DataCite en Latinoamérica en 2020, hemos estado deseando interactuar con nuestra comunidad en persona.

Since the establishment of the first DataCite consortium in Latin America in 2020, we’ve been wanting to engage with our community in person.

The Global Access Program (GAP) is DataCite’s initiative to improve access and enable communities in lesser-represented regions to further benefit from our open infrastructure services, launched with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (Grant 2022-316573). Throughout the next year, the program builds out DataCite’s international community with regional support and engagement in Africa,

I’m excited to join the DataCite team as Regional Community Engagement Specialist - Africa.
In the past, I have worked as an IT professional in sectors like academia, IT consultancy, insurance, banking, telecommunication, oil and gas, actuarial, and lastly an agricultural research organization. Most recently, I was the institutional data manager at IITA, leading the team responsible for open access, open data, and open science. I led various projects including the integration of DataCite DOIs into the institutional data repository, integrated research repositories with the institutional data repository, development of a knowledge portal, development of a data collection quality control platform, and migration of various knowledge platforms. I led open-access outreach and engagement across all the countries where the organization has a presence. I promoted data management best practices at infrastructural and operational levels including the development of an institutional data management plan template, data management, and open data-related capacity building for students, researchers, partners, and government agencies.
