Scott Edmunds is Editor-in-Chief at GigaScience Press, which has worked closely with DataCite since 2011, as part of the publisher’s commitment to open science and open data. Scott is a member of the Make Data Count advisory group and supports the initiative’s efforts to make it possible to evaluate the usage of data in the later steps of the data-sharing cycle, so that we can better assess the benefits of public sharing of data.

Do you have a feeling that a lot is happening in the open data space? Then you are not alone. Over the last decade, I've touched on various parts of the open data world including from an editorial perspective and more recently in considering data publishing ethics. I am thrilled to be joining DataCite on June 1, 2023, to full -time focus on the adoption and recognition of open data.

In the realm of scholarly publishing, the discipline metadata of outputs is of utmost importance. It is the backbone upon which works are discovered, indexed, and ultimately read. Without proper discipline metadata, outputs risk being lost in the vast sea of information in the scholarly landscape. However, despite the importance of discipline metadata, it can be a source of frustration for both authors and publishers.

I’m excited to join the DataCite team as Regional Community Engagement Specialist - Africa.
In the past, I have worked as an IT professional in sectors like academia, IT consultancy, insurance, banking, telecommunication, oil and gas, actuarial, and lastly an agricultural research organization. Most recently, I was the institutional data manager at IITA, leading the team responsible for open access, open data, and open science. I led various projects including the integration of DataCite DOIs into the institutional data repository, integrated research repositories with the institutional data repository, development of a knowledge portal, development of a data collection quality control platform, and migration of various knowledge platforms. I led open-access outreach and engagement across all the countries where the organization has a presence. I promoted data management best practices at infrastructural and operational levels including the development of an institutional data management plan template, data management, and open data-related capacity building for students, researchers, partners, and government agencies.

DataCite now has a mechanism built into Fabrica for designating a Repository account as an IGSN ID Catalog that will be used exclusively for the registration of IGSN IDs. This development ensures identification of Repositories and prefixes that are used for IGSN ID registration, and enables IGSN IDs to be tracked and identified. It also enables future updates to DataCite services and our Metadata Schema to be correctly applied to IGSN IDs.

DataCite is proud to announce the launch of our Global Access Program (GAP), which is designed to increase access to and adoption of PID services and infrastructure for communities beyond the Global North. The program is made possible by Grant 2022-316573 from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

As the world emerged from the global COVID-19 restrictions, 2022 will go down in history. When many of us observed the COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, geopolitical unrest, inflation, and tightening of the monetary policy started to have an impact on the global community. Despite these uncertainties, the DataCite community remained resilient and committed to our mission.

One of my first goals as the new Community Manager of DataCite was to improve how we think about and manage events. Today, I am happy to share with you the what, the why, and the how of DataCite’s Event Strategy and to introduce our new DataCite Connect events – don’t forget to save the date of our first event!

DataCite celebrates the recently issued Nelson memo “to make the results of taxpayer-supported research immediately available to the American public at no cost.” This is a significant step in the global policy landscape and will support collective action for change.

DataCite, founded in 2009, was established with a common purpose towards making research outputs and resources publicly available. Today, our community remains committed to our founding principles and works together with a common purpose. Our vision “Connecting Research, Identifying Knowledge” encapsulates our collective effort as a community to bring together the disparate pieces of the research lifecycle and bring rigor to the scholarly record by making outputs and resources findable, citable, connected and reused globally.
