This post forms part of my ‘aspects of the novel’ collection. Please do note that these entries, which may appear basic, are simply my own notes on the subject. They implicitly or explicitly describe a canon not of my own making or choosing and replicate this from various sources. The original encyclopaedia articles are far more comprehensive, nuanced and worth consulting.

As part of my 2021 research leave project, I am reading various encyclopaedias of the novel. As there is no way I could remember all that I have read, I have decided to make some notes in publicly accessible blog format. This post will serve as the coordinating index. The notes on these pages are much condensed and provide some indicative readings on the subject matter but by no means cover the full breadth of the encyclopaedias themselves.
