March 6th to 10th is Open Education Week! PKP is a Core Facility at Simon Fraser University (SFU), opening up access to knowledge. At the intersection of this work is scholarly publishing, open access, and open education. PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) plays a role at this intersection, as course journals are a type of open pedagogy involving students in the creation of open knowledge.

What’s on in scholarly publishing? Mark Huskisson, Publishing Development Specialist at the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), takes readers into an exploration of the recent increase in OJS usage around the world in a guest post for the Scholarly Kitchen, a blog established by the Society for Scholarly Publishing. February 6th – 10th marks Multilingual Week at Simon Fraser University (SFU), an initiative that lines up well with the Public Knowledge Project’s (PKP) work towards making research a global public good. As a Core Facility of SFU, and to emphasize the importance of multilingualism to the Project over the last 25 years, PKP answers the question of why multilingualism in the academy matters. Why Multilingualism?

Coalition Publica announced the 2023 Call for projects – Textual data in SSH with the goal of promoting access to massive research resources.

PKP released development updates in December. In advance of releasing the Open Journal Systems (OJS), Open Monograph Press (OMP), and Open Preprint Systems (OPS) software in version 3.4 this year, the PKP team offers a sneak-peek of what to expect, why they are most excited for the community, and some personal insights from their own work on the Project.

The Canadian Association of Learned Journals (CALJ-ACRS) is hosting an open webinar on OJS key features and offering tips for effective journal publishing.

Just before the recent launch of PKP’s new website and 25th anniversary campaign, the team celebrated the arrival of Urooj Nizami, who is responsible for forging and strengthening relationships as well as facilitating community engagement. Urooj has already made a major impact to the website, which now includes a Community Page outlining the global nature of the community, PKP’s membership model, and strategic partnerships.

In 1998, I initiated a project that set out to make research a greater part of what constituted public knowledge. I called it a Public Knowledge project.

The new year marks a number of exciting events for PKP.  First off, 2023 is PKP’s 25th year of operation.  The Project is launching a completely refreshed website this week, and is celebrating its recent designation as a Core Facility of Simon Fraser University.
