Im Juni 1972 fand in Stockholm die erste Konferenz der Vereinten Nationen zum Thema Umwelt statt. Sie gilt als Beginn der internationalen (globalen) Umweltpolitik. Gleich zu Beginn der Konferenz wurde am 5. Juni 1972 der Weltumwelttag vom United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) als World Environmental Day ausgerufen. Seitdem beteiligen sich weltweit jährlich rund 150 Staaten an diesem Aktionstag, dessen Gastgeberland jährlich wechselt.
